AI Training for Physicians: Practical, Safe AI for Clinical Work

AI training for physicians is hands-on education on responsible clinical AI use, led by Augusta Uwah, MD, MPH, in person across Indianapolis and central Indiana or virtually nationwide.

    Who this is for

This training is for physicians, medical groups, practice leaders and Physician Advisors who want to understand AI in the context of clinical work. It is appropriate for beginners and mixed-experience groups. The starting point is a task you already recognize, not a requirement to learn programming or adopt a particular product.

A group can focus on documentation support, patient-facing drafts or the administrative work surrounding care. Bring questions about where AI might help and where it should not be used. Avoid bringing identifiable patient records to an educational session; fictional scenarios allow the discussion to remain practical without exposing sensitive information.

    What participants learn

The AI for Physicians session explores clinical documentation, patient communication and diagnostic workflow support. The emphasis is on understanding and reviewing assistance, not delegating a clinical decision to a general-purpose model. These six skills connect everyday work with a consistent human review process.

    • Draft a note structure or organize a fictional clinical narrative, then inspect it for omitted details, invented findings and unsupported conclusions.
    • Create a patient communication draft in plain language from approved educational information, then review accuracy, tone and readability before sharing.
    • Summarize supplied literature or guideline passages, distinguish the source from the model’s interpretation and verify recommendations in the original publication.
    • Organize administrative tasks such as meeting agendas, policy summaries and correspondence drafts without entering patient-identifying or confidential material.
    • Evaluate AI output for accuracy, bias and uncertainty, including fabricated citations and assumptions that may not fit the clinical context.
    • Recognize data boundaries, never enter PHI into non-approved tools, and follow organizational policies and HIPAA requirements before using any clinical information.

    Session formats

AI for Physicians is a 60 to 90 minute session. AI as Your Personal Assistant is a 45 to 60 minute hands-on session for writing, research, scheduling and problem-solving. The appropriate focus can be discussed when you request training for your medical group.

Workshops are available in person across Indianapolis and central Indiana or virtually nationwide. For a private session, use the homepage request form to share your audience, preferred workshop and format. Public dates, when available, are listed on the bookings page; choose a date, reserve a spot and look for the confirmation email with a cancel link.

Responsible AI: verify, protect and keep people involved

AI can produce confident answers that are inaccurate, incomplete or biased. A fluent draft is not evidence. Check factual claims against original sources, inspect assumptions and decide whether the output fits the people it will affect. Ask what is missing, whose perspective is absent and who should review the work before it is shared.

Never enter PHI or confidential information into non-approved tools. Follow your organization's policies and, in healthcare settings, HIPAA requirements. A paid account or privacy setting alone does not establish approval for patient data. Use fictional examples during practice and ask your organization's appropriate teams which tools and uses are permitted.

Sessions are educational and are not medical, legal or compliance advice. Participants should follow their organization's policies. Keep a human responsible for the final work, and do not use AI-generated text as a substitute for professional judgment, qualified advice or an established review process.
